In contrast to a formal wedding with hundreds of last minute details to iron out, a honeymoon should be about relaxation and enjoyment with your new spouse. There should not be too much traveling time associated with the event, and the destination should be welcomed by both parties. This trip will be one you remember for the rest of your life (whether the vacation is good or bad) and a great beginning to a hopefully successful marriage. My wife and I decided to choose Key West, Florida and I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys a combination of sandy beaches, great nightlife and a laid back atmosphere where sandals are welcomed almost everywhere.

We made the trip to Key West in late September, which is a great time to visit South Florida. The temperatures are finally starting to break and you can expect sunny weather in the mid 80's. There is no direct flight through commercial airlines directly to Key West, but flying into Ft. Lauderdale puts you within hours of your destination. This may sound like an inconvenience but the drive to Key West is one of the most scenic views in North America and you will not soon forget it. If your flight is arriving in the evening, I recommend grabbing your rental car and heading east to Highway A1A (about a ten minute drive). Grab one of the many hotels available on the infamous Sunset Strip and enjoy an evening of shopping, dining, and South Florida's excellent nightlife. If you wish to book reservations before departing, the Yankee Clipper has gorgeous views of Ft. Lauderdale Beach and is within walking distance of several great dance clubs and restaurants. Dania Jai Alai, dubbed the world's fastest game, is also minutes away and offers gambling on a fast and exciting sport not seen elsewhere in the United States.

Once you are ready to make the drive towards the Florida Keys, jump on 95 South and follow the signs once you make it into South Miami. Once you pass the Rickenbacker Causeway Bridge you're officially out of Miami and about two hours from paradise. There are many area attractions on the way so plan on making an afternoon out of your drive down. Be sure to stop in Islamorada and grab a Rum Runner at the famous Tiki Bar. They have great views and a party going year round, so relax a bit and enjoy it. When ready to leave hopefully you worked up an appetite because The Whale Harbor Inn is one of the best buffets you will ever visit.

Once you actually make it to Key West, I highly recommend abandoning your car and renting scooters for your stay. The island itself has a main drive circling the outside of the island and many local roads zigzagging throughout the center. Though accessible by car, the scooters seem literally to be made for such an environment and eliminate finding a place to park. Any hotel will boast spectacular views since you are surrounded by ocean, but my wife and I stayed at the Marriot Beachside Hotel and had a fabulous time being pampered in a ridiculously relaxing atmosphete. Once you're ready to hit the town, enjoy great dining on fresh seafood and a large number of area attractions. A must see is the nightly sunset celebration in Mallory Square. There is a performer school right next to the wharf, so the boardwalk is often packed with talented magicians, mimes, and other free entertainment. A great mix of local merchants and unique personalities will keep you entertained regardless of your destination. Also check out some of the area's museums to learn about the deep culture established in the area. Fantasy Fest, containing a Mardi Gras type atmosphere, takes place in the last week in October. Before you leave you are required as a tourist to visit the Southernmost Point and have your picture taken next to the beacon; one of the most photographed places in the United States.

If you decide on heading down to the Florida Keys for your honeymoon or just a great vacation you will not be disappointed. My wife and I had a wonderful adventure and I'm sure you will too. Let me know how it goes.
